How do I play?

Asked with: Mansions of Madness: Second Editionbg-205059-en-1e

A game of Mansions of Madness is played over a series of rounds.[1][2] Each round consists of two phases: the investigator phase and the mythos phase.[1][2]
**Setup**
1. Separate Investigator cards from all other cards.[3]
2. Separate all other cards into decks by card type.[3]
3. Shuffle the Damage and Horror decks individually and place them facedown in the central play area.[3]
4. Organize the cards in the Common Item, Unique Item, Spell, and Condition decks alphabetically and place them faceup within reach of all players.[3]
5. Gather all map tiles and organize them by tile size.[3]
6. Ensure each monster figure has a matching token slotted into its base.[3]
7. Separate all non-monster tokens into pools by token type.[3]
8. Run the Mansoden of Madness app.[3]
9. From the app's main menu, select "More" and then "My Collection" to ensure all desired products and expansions are enabled.[3]
10. From the main menu, select "New Game".[3]
11. As a group, decide which story to play and input the selection in the app.[3]
12. Each player chooses an investigator, taking the corresponding card and figure, and inputs the selection in the app (a single player chooses two investigators and controls both).[3]
13. As instructed by the app, investigators as a group gain specific Common Items, Spells, or other possessions, which they may distribute among themselves as they decide.[3]
**The Investigator Phase**
During this phase, investigators each take one turn in the order of their choice.[1] During an investigator's turn, that investigator performs up to two actions.[1] Possible actions include:
* **Move Action:** Move up to two spaces; movement can be interrupted to perform other actions.[1]
* **Search Action:** Investigate a Search token in your space by using the app.[1] An investigator must spend an action to select an option with a search icon and must occupy the same space as the token.[4][1]
* **Explore Action:** Investigate an Explore token in your space by using the app.[1]
* **Interact Action:** Interact with a Person or Interact token in your space by using the app.[1] An investigator can only interact with a Person if they occupy the same space as that Person.[5]
* **Attack Action:** Attack a monster in your space with a melee weapon or a monster within range with a ranged weapon by using the app.[1]
* **Trade Action:** Trade possessions with other investigators in your space, or pick up and drop possessions in your space.[1]
* **Push Action:** Push a monster or carry another investigator.[1]
* **Set Fire Action:** Set fire to your space or an adjacent space, provided the investigator has a Light Source.[1]
* **Steal Action:** Steal possessions from another investigator.[1]
* **Component Actions:** Perform actions allowed by specific components or effects, such as "Barricade a Door" to prevent movement.[1]
**The Mythos Phase**
The mythos phase is broken into three steps, during which the app generates instructions for the investigators to resolve:[1]
1. **Event step:** The app generates one or more mythos events to be resolved.[1]
2. **Monster step:** The app generates instructions for activating each monster.[1]
3. **Horror step:** The app generates instructions to be resolved.[1]
**Ending the Game**
Players continue resolving rounds until they have won or lost the game.[2]

what this block IS: the PASSAGE SEARCH's own results — the same search that fills this page's closest-passages list — and NOT the passages the answerer read. Answering runs its OWN retrieval: a far wider candidate pool, re-ranked down to a final handful, plus floors this search never applies — the base rulebook, surviving errata corrections, and one slot per book on a multi-book read. Each of those armed only if THIS ask sent what it needs: the boost block names the ids it forwarded, and the scope line names the books it read. A document the answer CITES that no row here names is therefore EXPECTED, not a defect: two searches, two candidate pools, two orders. The answerer's own final rows are shown in their own block below, beside these and never mixed into them.

score = the fused retrieval score (reciprocal-rank fusion over the search arms) — NOT a cosine similarity. This ruling ran the THREE-ARM fuse (full-text + vector + the doc-priority boost arm, which carried the base rulebook and/or the errata corrections this query matched), whose arithmetic ceiling is 0.04918 — all three arms ranking the same chunk #1 (ceiling = arms/(k+1) at k=60). The measured healthy band 0.016–0.033 was measured on TWO-arm asks and does not bound this one: its high end is the two-arm ceiling, and a third arm has room above it. A chunk only one arm ranked highly lands near 0.016 (that one arm's #1 vote), so 0.03 here is an excellent hit, not a 3% match.

per-arm ranks (the rank each search arm gave a chunk): NOT DISCLOSED by the gateway. Fusion happens gateway-side and only the FUSED score crosses the wire, so rulesage cannot show them without a gateway change. The rank column below is the FUSED rank (position in the returned list), which is real.

token count per chunk: NOT DISCLOSED — chunk token counts are not reported on the ask path. The character counts below are of the bounded snippet/quote rulesage actually received — a real measurement of what we hold, never an estimate of the chunk.

what this block IS: the passages the ANSWERING read put in front of the answerer, in the order it read them — the other half of the two reads described above, and the one that decides what the answer could possibly say. Each row names the book it came from and where in that book it sits, what it scored when the search arms were fused, which arm carried it there, and whether the re-ranker chose it or a floor guaranteed it a slot. A row here that no passage-search row names is EXPECTED: a far wider pool, re-ranked, with floors the passage search never applies.

candidate pool: the answering read scored 44 passages, out of a ceiling of 80 set gateway-side. Both figures are reported by the gateway for THIS ask — measurements of what actually happened, not constants read out of anyone's source and printed here on faith.

floors armed for this ask: the base rulebook — armed · surviving errata corrections — not armed · one slot per book on a multi-book read — not armed. Every floor is stated on every ask, armed or not, so a floor that did not apply here is never mistaken for one this app does not know about.

arms fused for this ask: vector + full-text + the doc-priority boost arm. Stated separately from the rows because an arm that ran and carried nothing is a different fact from an arm that never ran.

watchdog
first-token watchdog: 30s per arming window (rulesage.table.first-token-watchdog-seconds), re-armed once by the passages frame — so the worst case before a reader falls back to polling is 60s. Whether it actually fired is a BROWSER-side decision that never reaches the server, so it is not recorded here. The stream path above is the server's half of that story: whether a delta was emitted at all.
num_ctx · think posture
both are the CHILD's settings, not rulesage's, and no ask reply carries them — an answer never states which context window or think posture produced it. The live-seat line above reads them from the running child instead, where the gateway can answer for itself; it describes the child NOW, not this ask.
